DIY body treatments

Maybe it’s sweater weather, maybe it’s the leaves changing — or cooler temps taking over — but if you’re anything like us, you want to be cozy AF (and well moisturized) come fall. And seeing as there’s a ton of autumnal ingredients that are practically made for DIY scrubs, lotions, and wraps, (hello, pumpkin, vanilla, cranberry, and blood orange), now’s as good a time as any to whip out your mixing bowls and get concocting. Oh, and since you can’t turn a corner or pop open a beauty app without seeing crystals everywhere, we’ve included one very healing, magical DIY crystal massage in this super #SelfCareSunday-approved list as well. Enjoy!

DIY Hibiscus & Blood Orange Body Scrub

Scrubs are one of the easiest things to whip up in the comfort of your own kitchen (or bathroom). Not to mention they help you de-slough and banish dry flaky skin in seconds, revealing a softer smooth bod. To help reset your skin for fall, take inspiration from the Body Botany Treatment at Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa Valley. “One of our most popular body treatments uses an antioxidant scrub full of hibiscus and blood orange from Native Nectar Botanicals, which leaves the skin glowing, renewed, and well hydrated,” says Kristin Brock, spa director at Spa at Carneros. And since summer can be a major dehydrator (from all that sun and swimming), and so can the shift of seasons, it’s important to get your skin in check.

How to: To recreate this scrub, Brock recommends blending natural sugar (choose your desired coarseness) and one blended blood orange, with a small amount of nourishing oils (such as avocado or jojoba), and a few drops of your favorite essential oils. “Massage over dry or slightly damp skin, and it’s best if you do this in the shower or before a bath,” she adds.

DIY Pumpkin Spice Body Peel

Nothing says fall like pumpkin. The scent, the color, the spa treatments, the lattes… You get it. But it’s also a superfood and one of the healthiest fruits out there since it’s loaded with antioxidants and disease-fighting vitamins. “The smell of pumpkin can bring many of us a feeling of nostalgia, but pumpkin enzymes can also rejuvenate and reveal radiant, younger-looking skin,” explains Keshia Cacal, an aesthetician at The Spa at Red Rock by Well & Being. “Our Pumpkin Spice Body Peel is so amazing because the apple and pumpkin enzymes dissolve dead, unwanted cells from the surface, as the cinnamon vanilla brown sugar scrub polishes, and the honey works as a humectant to boost hydration,” adds Cacal.

How to: For an at-home recipe (that you can make in five minutes), simply mix together one cup of granulated sugar, 1/4 cup of coconut oil, two teaspoons pumpkin spice and vanilla extract and gently apply the scrub to any part of your body you want to exfoliate, then remove with a warm steam towel.

DIY Crystal Massage

Crystals are the hot beauty tool of the moment, and although this might not smooth your skin, it will calm your mind. Known for their healing, detoxifying, and depuffing powers — and all-around pretty presence — they’re everywhere lately, especially in spa treatments. “Incorporating crystals into a more practical, daily routine is the best way to discover their innate benefits and keeping one on your physical person will invoke positivity and beneficial energies,” says Matthew Brink, hotel manager at The Confidante Miami Beach. “Our Crystal Message Treatment in partnership with Glacce Luxury Spiritual, begins with a crystal-infused water ceremony to soothe the stomach, and culminates with a specialized crystal sphere (a new massage tool) that targets the gut.” Since we are what we eat (and stress and internal issues can start in the gut), this treatment is amazing for clearing that up. Plus, it’s easy to do at home.

How to: Start by rubbing a crystal-infused oil or lotion all over, then lay back with some relaxing music and hold a crystal stone over your belly to help alleviate tension and anxiety. Let the good vibes flow!

DIY Resveratrol Wrap

We all know Resveratrol is one of those good-for-you ingredients (found in red wine and cocoa), and it’s regarded as ‘the fountain of youth’ for its anti-aging benefits. “Our Cranberry Sangria Wrap is soothing, repairing, and hydrating because of Resveratrol — one of the main ingredients in the Wine Down Serum, $56, which is packed full of vitamins and antioxidants that help reduce environmental and oxidative stress to your skin,” says Haley Winkle, lead massage therapist at Well & Being Spa at Four Seasons Resort & Club Dallas Las Colinas. Since most beauty supply stores, as well as Amazon, carry Resveratrol serum or a body oil that contains vitamins A, C and E (like grapeseed oil or rose hip oil), you can easily DIY this fall-friendly wrap at home.

How to: Just add coconut oil and rub thoroughly onto the body, then wrap yourself up like a burrito in saran wrap to allow the ingredients to seep into the skin for 15 minutes before rinsing off.
