All that merry merry is fun and all, until the very next day when you wake up with a holiday hangover questioning your food consumption choices from last night. So, to make sure you’re ready for round two of the festive season and looking and feeling yourself again for NYE, we’ve got some tips for you. So, put down that slice of whatever you found lying around, and think twice before you pick up the fork (again), and heed the advice of these nutrition and fitness pros. They’re here to help you get back to feeling fresh – remember, sometimes you just have to grin and kale it.
1. Start your day with protein
To feel fuller and take on your day (tension headache and all), say bottoms up to a breakfast protein shake. You can even throw in some frozen berries for a bit of fiber and sweetness or jazz it up with a pinch of cinnamon and cloves, which can make a basic chocolate smoothie taste like gingerbread realness.
2. Chill on all the leftovers
Those holiday leftovers might be calling your name at the office, but skip the chocolate-covered cherries, candy-coated pretzels, and yes — even gluten-free cookies — in lieu of a healthier protein bar, a piece of fruit, or a handful of almonds or cashews. When it comes to the best foods to support your cleansing ways, Holistic Beauty Expert & Co-Founder of ZSS Skincare Paula Simpson knows best. “Broccoli sprouts (both an immune booster and detoxifier), artichokes, lemon, flaxseed, and dark leafy greens like kale, spinach, collard greens, and swiss chard will get the job done,” she says. 3. Spill the tea
When you’ve got tummy troubles big time, consider herbal teas the answer to your gurgling woes. 4. Pop those pills
Probiotics and enzymes pills, that is. 5. Do not go full speed at the gym
… Because you will crash. “You’re probably going to have a mini freakout about all the food you ate — and all the workouts you didn’t do — in the past few days and want to sprint back on track, but remember you don’t need to be aggressive to your body,” says Crunch Personal Trainer Sandy Liang. “If you restrict and excessively cut your food intake, you’ll mess with your metabolism and potentially end up spiraling into a binge and restrict pattern,” she says. “And if you overload and do a crazy amount of workouts, then you could fatigue, strain a muscle, or hurt a joint. Then no training will happen.” So instead, get back into your regular routine of eating and exercising regularly and any weight gain will come right off.
6. Make turmeric your best friend
Regular use of turmeric improves liver detoxification, so when in doubt, turn to turmeric.
