Hydrated skin is our number one goal; it’s basically the secret to looking healthy and more youthful. When your skin is dehydrated, fine lines and dark under-eye circles are more prominent, and your natural glow is just a little bit lacking. In fact, in a study by Wakefield Research, consumers ranked ‘hydrated skin’ as the number one trait of skin health by 47% (followed by ‘even tone’ at 16%)!
But here’s the thing, during Ramadan (and the summer in general) hydration is a big problem as you’re just not able to drink as much water through the day as usual – you should be aiming for at least two liters of water a day. However, intermittent fasting has been proven to have a ton of health benefits, which makes Ramadan a good time for your body to detox (and a spiritual detox if you’re Muslim). So, try to use your evenings to really indulge in your skincare routine and add back that hydration that has been lacking from fasting or hot days in the sun.
Here’s what we’re going to be doing to keep our skin extra hydrated during Ramadan and the pending summer months.
For our Body:
Step 1: Dry Brush Every Evening
As your skin can get a little drier, this is a great way to buff away dead skin while you also speed up lymphatic drainage – the system that drains toxins from the body. Do it just before you have a bath or shower. Find out more about dry brushing here.
Step 2: Epsom Salt Bath or Bath Oils
Not only is a long bath seriously relaxing and indulgent, but Epsom salts are also a great way to relax, distress, and ease any aches. Alternatively, we love to add a spoon of coconut oil to our bath to hydrate and nourish our skin. Check out how to have the best bath here.
Step 3: Hydrate with Body Oils
After stepping out of your shower or bath, to keep moisture locked in, smother yourself in your fave body oil while your skin is still damp. We love the Caudalie Divine Oil, $49, which soaks in quickly and comes with a spray nozzle that makes application extra easy, and you won’t need a lot. We also love Bio Oil, $9, which helps to smooth out skin tone and hydrate deeply.
Try to drink plenty of water when you break your fast and through the evening as well, to rehydrate your body and keep it as hydrated as possible for the following day.
For our Face:
To ensure our skin gets the replenishment it needs at night, layering hydrating products and squeezing in a super hydrating sheet mask like our WISHFUL Thirst Trap Cocoon Mask, $9, whenever we have time is our top priority. You don’t have to do all of these steps (do what suits you), but if you have time, we highly recommend packing in as many as you can!
Step 1: Cleanse
No skincare routine can begin without a clean canvas: Start with an oil-based cleanser to melt away SPF, makeup, and pollution. We’re OBSESSED with the Rodial Pink Diamond Cleansing Balm, $59, and we also love to make our own cleansing oils with sweet almond oil and coconut oil. Then follow with a water-based cleanser; we love Neutrogena’s new Deep Clean Purifying Clay Cleanser & Mask, (alcohol-free) $9, which is made with kaolin and bentonite clay to remove impurities and detox pores with salicylic acid. You can also use it as a mask a few times a week – we love products that multitask!
Step 2: Tone
Toning is essential as it removes any last traces of dirt and makeup, and it can help to improve skin texture and tone, especially if you use one formulated with AHAs like hydrating lactic acid, pore-refining willow bark extract or AHAs.
Toners we love:
Splurge: The REN Ready Steady Glow Tonic, $38, this clarifying toner does it all.
Save: The Inkey List Glycolic Acid Toner, $11, does wonderful things without the price tag!
Alcohol-free: Centella Water Alcohol-Free Toner, $17, is super hydrating and soothing.
Pro Step: Mist For Extra Hydration
If you’ve ever watched the queens of hydration, AKA Korean beauty experts Christine Chang and Sarah Lee, do their skincare routine, you’ll notice they mist their faces in between ERRRRY step! Seriously though, it works – you only have to look at their skin to know.
Mists we love:
We love the Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Ultra-Fine Mist, $28, which smells incredible and is super soothing and nourishing. The Biossance Squalane + Hyaluronic Toning Mist, $32, helps to plump fine lines (ideal when your skin is dehydrated) and hydrates with two types of hyaluronic acid (alcohol-free too).
The fresh Vitamin Nectar Antioxidant Glow Water, $24, is a super fine vitamin-enriched mist that soothes, protects, hydrates, and locks in moisture – it’s also alcohol-free.
Alcohol-free DIY: Combine 100ml of rose water and 1 tbsp of glycerin in a spray bottle – et voila, the perfect hydrating mist.
Step 3: Add Essence
Adding an essence to your routine can majorly up your skin’s hydration levels as it sinks in deeply and quickly. We love to gently pat in the Peach & Lily Wild Dew Treatment Essence, (alcohol-free) $39, which is packed with antioxidant-rich lotus extract, brightening niacinamide, and lots of other skin-hydrating ingredients – it makes our skin feel SO soft and smooth. Follow with a mist before your next step!
Additional Step: Mask
Masks are a great way to give the skin an instant hit of hydration, so try and pack one in as often as possible! We like to do ours after toner and essence, and before our serums. Don’t forget to pat in any excess mask serum before you apply your next steps. We love the Tony Moly Intense Care Snail Hydrogel Mask, $8, and of course, our WISHFUL Thirst Trap Cocoon Mask, $9, which feels like your flooding your skin with the most intensely hydrating ingredients and leaves even the most parched skin extra plump and glowy. We’re also completely obsessed with the 111Skin collection of face masks, which give next-level hydration.
Step 4: Add a Hydrating Serum
Serums have targeted ingredients that can penetrate deep into the dermal layer giving you a major boost – it’s not a step to miss!
Steal: The Inkey List Polyglutamic Acid, $15: This is THE bomb at skin hydration – it’s four times more hydrating than hyaluronic acid (which means it can hold 4000 times its weight in water)! As well as thoroughly hydrating the skin – so much that it improves the appearance of fine lines – the formula feels amazingly smoothing and soothing on the skin and makes a great base for makeup.
Splurge: REN Flash Hydro-Boost Instant Plumping Emulsion, $47, utilizing hyaluronic acid and Xylitol to maximize moisture levels by drawing in water, this lipid-rich formula also helps to prevent water loss and repair the skin barrier – plus it feels amazing!
Step 5: Moisturize
A good moisturizer is the essential final step in a hydrating skincare regime. Not only will it add more hydration, but it will add more nutrients to the skin (you can never have too many nutrients, right?) all while locking in all that moisture. Some options we love are:
Drugstore fave: CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, $13: This lightweight moisturizer gives 24-hour hydration and is loved by derms globally for its ceramide-rich formula that restores and protects the skin.
Embyiolisse Filaderm Crème, $16, (alcohol-free): Packed with shea butter and soy protein that improves firmness, this deeply hydrating moisturizer repairs the natural lipid barrier for all day and night nourishment.
Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream, $68: This cult-fave boasts antioxidant-rich Japanese purple rice that plumps the skin and adds a stunning glow.
Glow Recipe Avocado Sleeping Mask, $39: A few times a week, swap out your moisturizer for this deeply hydrating sleeping mask, which is packed with antibacterial Manuka honey and PHAs that gently exfoliate the skin.
VenEffect Anti-Aging Protective Moisturizer, $185: Advanced phytoestrogen technology along with peptides, proteins, and nourishing ingredients improve skin’s elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines, and promote hyaluronic acid production in the skin.
Step 6: Use a Face Oil
If you wanna go that extra step, a good facial oil is the cherry on top of your hydrating cake. Oils are lipophilic and have a small molecular structure that can penetrate further into your dermis, allowing your skin to retain hydration at a much deeper level. Using the right facial oil will not only repair and protect the skin’s barrier, but it’ll also nourish and plump like no other product on your shelf.
Splurge: Ren Skincare Rose 012 Moisture Defence Oil, $80: This cult-fave contains a potent combination of rose oil, safflower oil, Ximena oil, and cranberry seed oil, which help repair the skin’s natural barrier and revitalize the skin.
Steal (Alcohol-Free): The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil, $10, works to heal and hydrate while reducing signs of aging.
Top tip: When you’re applying a facial oil, make sure you warm up the oil in your hands first to activate the ingredients. Then gently massage and pat the oil into your skin.
