7 Stunning Holiday Hair Looks You Need To Recreate

‘Tis the season for festive AF hair! Between glitter sprays, bobby pins covered in cute pearls, gemstones, and stars, and velvet bow barrettes and scrunchies, there’s no shortage of accessory-driven options to rock at every soirée you have to make an appearance at, between now and New Year’s Eve. And we’ve tapped some of the top talent in the biz to tell you how to effortlessly recreate these looks, so you can spend less time getting ready and more time popping bubbly.
Pin It – Everywhere
If you’re anything like us, you probably have a pile of unused bobby pins laying around, and Joico Brand Ambassador Larisa Love has a genius (and party-ready) way to use ‘em up. “My top look for the holidays are sleek ponytails with stacked accessories in one place. It could be long bobby pins (that contrast with the color of your hair) stacked next to each other, or even a string of pearls (or pearl hairpins) woven in,” she says.
Get the look:
1. Use a hair oil like the Joico Blonde Life Brilliant Glow Brightening Oil, $23, to add shine and smoothness to the hair, then insert blonde or black bobby pins ensuring that you’re using the opposite color of the hair to make the accessories stand out.
2. For an even classier version, try Faux Pearl Hair Pins, $3, in the base of the pony, or arranged in one long row down the back of your head.
Glitter Pony
“The holidays are all about glitz and glam and this glitter-flecked ‘do is reminiscent of the glimmer after a fresh snowfall,” says Amber Fairlie, creative director of The Manor Salon. The best part? You can customize it, using your favorite color as the glitter.
Get the look:
1. Loosely curl the ends of the hair for some movement, then add volume to the roots (without teasing them), by using Oribe Thick Dry Finishing Spray, $42.
2. Next, gather the hair with your brush and tie it back, one inch from the bottom of the hairline.
3. Hide the hair tie by taking a small section of hair from the bottom of the ponytail and wrap it around, securing the wrap with a bobby pin.
4. Then balayage (hand paint) a water-soluble glitter glue in gold, silver, bronze, or red onto the hair. (*Note: You can find this liquid glitter glue at most craft stores).
5. Tame baby hairs around your face with Oribe Star Glow Styling Wax, $42, and finish the look with a spritz of medium-hold hairspray.
Gold Grecian Glam
When you want a bit of Grecian flair in your hair, opt for a gold leaf embellishment, like Emily Blunt’s. According to celebrity stylist Sarah Potempa, “The whimsical chain elevates the braid by adding a touch of elegance, which is perfect for the holidays.”
Get the look:

Bow Time
In a season centered around bows, why not incorporate the #1 accessory into your locks like Potempa did with this super cute style? “Velvet bows are a simple way to top off any spirited look with minimal effort,” she explains.
Get the look:
1. Curl your hair with the Beachwaver S1.25, $129, then create two high buns.
2. Braid two small sections of hair right under the buns and attach Beachwaver Co. Velvet Barrette Bows, $6.
Understated Glam
“Given that the half-up/half-down ‘do is still all over the runway and the red carpet, it only makes sense you accessorize it this season,” says Kérastase celebrity hairstylist Jennifer Yepez. “I like to give my clients added volume and wave for a bit of a snatch and I’m loving Syd Hayes hairpins and the Jen Atkin X Chloe and Isabel Collection.”
Get the look:
1. Prep the hair with Kérastase Densifique Densimorphose, $37, for a thickening effect and blow dry with a round brush.
2. Then take large sections of hair with a 1 ¾-inch curling iron, and curl all hair downwards in the same direction, leaving the ends out.
3. Brush the hair out and designate the half-up section by creating an imaginary line that starts at your ear and goes up to the crown of your head.
4. Spray a hairspray like the Kérastase Laque Couture, $28, on the top of your head and work it through using a flat brush. To really smooth the hair and eliminate any baby hairs in the front, you can also use a toothbrush.
5. Tie the half-up pony with a cool scrunchie or clip — like Jen Atkin X Chloe and Isabel Velvet Bow Scrunchie, $30, and apply Kérastase Nutritive Crème Magistrale, $37, for hydration and silkiness.
Simple Chic
“We see that the Danish concept of hygge is a growing trend, so why not make your hair match? Hygge is all about a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life and an effortless updo with a simple statement piece can be a great look for family holiday gatherings,” says Christinah Nicolaisen, co-founder of Scandinavian beauty brand Eleni & Chris.
Get the look:
1. Use a smoothing cream like the Eleni & Chris Keramin Leave-in Treatment Cream, $29, in towel-dried hair to get super soft tresses.
2. Next build volume in the roots by using a dry texturing shampoo and backcombing, for effect.
3. Add some holiday shine with a few drops of Pure Treatment Hair Oil, $39, or a shine spray, and twist the hair starting in the front and finish just above the ears.
4. Tie both parts with your chosen accessory like a gold barrette, or even Poinsettia Flower Clips, $19, if you really want to go all out.
Sparkly Accessories

Get the look:
For pink glitter: Mist hair with Prep Primer spray, $25, then work a quarter-sized amount of Bb. Grooming creme, $31, into the hair for a satiny finish. Create two cornrow-style French braided pigtails and pin into place using bobby pins, and finish by mixing glitters from Guerra Paint & Pigment with aloe vera gel and a drop of mineral oil, then “paint” the sparkling gel onto the braids.
For starry cascade: Create texture in the hair by puffing Pret-a-Powder, $28, at the roots and bursting Bb. Thickening Dryspun Texture Spray, $31, throughout, then gather a section of hair at the back of the head and secure with cute festive pins, like the Jennifer Behr Venus Bobby Pins, $128 each, in a cascading effect.
