After months of growing out our hair, relying on at-home dye kits, and spending lots of time at home, it’s no surprise people are running to salon chairs and asking for the big chop. If you’ve been toying with the idea of going bold, you’re in the right spot. We asked celebrity stylists about the head-turning looks that are trending RN – here are their four top picks.

From Audrey Hepburn to Zoe Kravitz, the iconic pixie is a mainstay. It’s especially trendy right now as people are eager to change up their look and push their usual hair boundaries. Plus, the cut is super versatile and can be tweaked to flatter your bone structure and hair texture.

“If you’re hesitant, always work your way up to a pixie cut,” says Jalyn Smith, a hairstylist at SPACE by Alex Brown in Chicago, Illinois. “I always encourage my clients to start with a chin length bob and then go shorter when they’re ready. Also, product is your best friend.”

For this type of cut, Jalyn recommends warming up a little bit of Oribe’s Airstyle Flexible Finish Cream into your palms. Work the product into your roots and use it on some of the tiny pieces, as well, to help create a soft, textured look.

Retro Shag

Did someone say ‘70s? The shag is totally trending, and we are living for it. Whether you’re opting for a modern spin a la the Wolf Cut or keeping it classic, this look is super versatile and flattering.

“The shag is a long-layered cut topped off with a curtain bang and face framing pieces,” says Al Campbell, a celebrity stylist and spokesperson for Mizani. “You can wear it sleek or amp it up with tons of volume. Either way it’s a hit.”

To pull off the retro shag hairstyle, Campbell says to consult with your stylist and to have them pay careful attention to your face shape and shoulder structure. This will help them determine the perfect length for you. He also recommends leaning on Mizani’s Press Agent Thermal Smoothing System, which will set any texture type up for success – “from a sleek finish to volume of the Gods.”

Classic Bob

What better time to bring back the classic bob – which was all the rage in the roaring ‘20s – than in the new ‘20s?

“This haircut changed how women see themselves and how we see women,” says Rodger Azadganian, celebrity hair stylist and founder of äz Craft Luxury Haircare. “It was liberating. It was daring. It was sexy. It was iconic.”

Like all the cuts featured here, the bob can be done in so many different ways. There’s the graduated bob, angled bob, and bobs that are textured or tousled. You could also keep it sleek, add bangs, or opt for a longer-length bob (AKA the lob). Whatever style you choose, note that you’ll need to schedule more frequent cuts to maintain the shape. The upkeep is totally worth it, though.

Modern Mullet

Nobody could have predicted the mullet comeback, but here we are in late 2021 and this ‘80s-inspired haircut has firmly planted itself in pop culture again. It’s the same “business in the front, party in the back” look we know and love, only it’s gone slightly softer for a more modern look.

“Riri (Rihanna) really set the tone on this one,” says Smith. “The modern mullet is for the brave-hearted looking for a bold look. Own it, rock it, and have fun with it.”

For styling, she recommends using a texturizing spray for a more tousled, piece-y look. Also, ask your stylist to create more blended layers moving from the front to back for less of a full-throttle ‘80s throwback and more of that modern touch. If you’re really feeling edgy, opt for a fashion color like lime green, purple, or deep blue.
