As much as we love celebrity hair trends, we’ll be the first to admit that they’re not always achievable or sustainable… Ahem, platinum blonde. However, the current hairstyle that all of our fave It girls are slaying has to be THE easiest and most wearable trend that we’ve reported to date, and bonus points because it’s also so chic and sexy. Welcome, the braided ponytail… Achieved in just a few minutes with a couple of hair ties and a lot of hair spray. Here’s how to get the lewk and some serious hairspo…

As with any hair trend, you can add your own flavor to the style whether that’s by adding extensions, styling your baby hairs, or adjusting the position of the braid. However, before we get into the extras, here’s a basic step-by-step:

Step 1: Comb a boar bristle brush like the Briogeo Vegan Boar Bristle Hair Brush, $28, through dry hair to detangle any knots and add shine. Next, prep the hair with a small amount of serum like the Tresemme Keratin Smooth Keratin Infusing Smoothing Serum, $6, to reduce frizz for a sleek finish.

Step 2: Gather your locks into a pony, brushing the hair towards the crown of your head to smooth out any bumps, then secure tightly with a hair tie. To elevate the look, conceal the hair tie by taking a small section of hair from the base of the ponytail and wrap it around the hair tie, then secure with a bobby pin.

Step 3: Before you braid your hair, tighten your ponytail. Next, braid your ponytail using a three-braid method and secure it with a hair tie. If you want to switch it up, try a fishtail braid.

Step 4: For a sleek finish, spray a toothbrush or edge styler with hairspray to tame flyaways, or use a gel like the Eco Style Professional Olive Styling Gel, $3, for extra hold on thicker textures.

Depending on your vibe, switch up the position of the ponytail. A super-high ponytail is our go-to – it’s universally flattering as it draws the eyes up, accentuating your cheekbones for a snatched finish.

The best way to achieve a high pony is to prep the hair in two sections. Begin by spraying the roots directly with Tresemme Compressed Micro Mist Hairspray Extend, $10, then use a smoothing brush to gather hair half up and secure with a Kitsch Blackout elastic, $7. Repeat on the bottom section, adding the remaining hair to the half-up ponytail. Finish by braiding your ponytail and then secure – now you’ve got yourself a certified lewk!

For a more laidback vibe, position the ponytail slightly lower, like influencer Matilda Djerf. This will also create the illusion of a longer braid.

We’re also vibing this super low ponytail. In fact, a sleek low pony is trending for fall! Adding a braid into the mix is the perfect way to add a playful, cool-girl element to the classic style.

One of our fave things about this hairstyle is that it’s super versatile and can be worn for any occasion, from the red carpet to a pilates class. Take note from H.E.R.’s Emmys beauty look and pair your braided ponytail with stylized baby hairs and diamontes for an ultra-glam feel.

If you want to add extra length to your braid, wrap an extension piece around the base of the ponytail, then wrap a piece of hair around the base to conceal the extension. We love the Hidden Crown Hair Thick Clip-In Extension, $149, as there are so many shades to choose from. Another great extension brand for kinky, curly, or coily hair is Kinky Curly Yaki – their Ponytail Extensions are perfect for this trend.

Flawless baby hairs make this look, as Megan Thee Stallion proves. For perfectly laid edges, celeb hairstylist Kathleen Riley recommends the Murray’s Premium Edgewax Gel, $4. She told us, “It is the perfect product for laying edges and baby hairs. It’s also amazing to lay down any flyaways when doing a sleek look.”

If you want to try something a little different, instead of using the three-strand braid method, split your hair into two sections and wrap the hair into a twisted braid.

We’re obsessed with this wet-look braid on Desi Perkins. To achieve a super sleek finish in seconds, saturate your hair in a heavy serum like the Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum, $5, then style as usual. Alternatively, you can also apply an ultra-rich hair mask from root to tip and then style a braided pony. It’s perfect for Zoom calls or pools days when you want to look polished while also showing your hair some love.
