Hair-Tinsel

While you may have thought you’d seen the last of tinsel when you tucked away your holiday décor, there’s a plot twist… it’s making a comeback and it’s heading straight for your hair. Yes, you read that right: The latest hair trend to go viral is hair tinsel. With over 100 million views (and counting) on TikTok, plus major celeb backing, it’s set to be a huge trend this year. And when you think about it, the resurgence of hair tinsel does make sense considering the general theme for all 2022 trends is fun, frivolous, and hopelessly feel-good! TBH, hair tinsel is exactly that. Here’s everything you need to know.

The Hair Tinsel Trend

It should come as no surprise that the hair trend, like so many beloved TikTok trends, is deeply rooted in the Y2K beauty era. Most notably, when Beyoncé showed up at the Grammys sporting a smokey eye, accented with golden hair tinsel. The trend quickly trickled down to the masses and fans everywhere attached hair tinsel to their roots while they danced to Baby Boy on their iPod.

Since Beyoncé slayed the trend, it’s made countless celeb comebacks. Our fave is Kacey Musgraves who dominated the hair look with a snatched ponytail drippin’ in tinsel.

Most recently Katy Perry sported hair tinsel to promote her Las Vegas residency with multicolored tinsel hanging through her frosty black locks. As you can see from both standout looks, it’s a major lewk and shouldn’t be done in half measures.

Okay, so why has TikTok suddenly spiked this trend resurgence you may ask? Well, TikTok loves anything from the Y2K era, but it also loves a hair trend that’s easy to DIY and doesn’t break the bank, and that’s undoubtedly the case with hair tinsel. It’s also radiating Euphoria vibes, which is another major TikTok trigger.

Hair tinsel also applies effortlessly into most protective hairstyles, from box braids to cornrows. Simply feed the tinsel into your braid from the root and you’ll instantly inject some sparkle into any look. Whether you opt for a hint of tinsel or go all in, it creates a stunning final look.

How To Apply Hair Tinsel To Your Locks

If you simply enter the search term “hair tinsel tutorial” on TikTok, you’ll be greeted with thousands of tutorials. You basically have two methods of application. The first option, involves tying a single strand of tinsel to a tiny section of hair, while the second option involves using small beads to attach the tinsel to your hair.

Both application techniques are easy to maintain, however, although the single-strand method is easier to DIY, it does fall out more easily, whereas the bead technique can last through a hair wash! It all depends on what result you’re looking for. Most importantly, with either application, make sure the tinsel is heat resistant so that it doesn’t melt if you try to go over it with a styling tool. You can purchase it from Amazon here for less than $10.

Step 1: To create extra grip at your root, spray some texture spray or dry shampoo.

Step 2: Fold tinsel in half and create a small loop. Grab a small cluster of your natural hair and create a slipknot with the tinsel. To create a slip knot, lay hair on tinsel and feed the end of tinsel through the loop and tighten.

Step 3: Tie together one strand of tinsel and one hair strand.

Step 4: Tie each strand of tinsel together until it’s firmly attached.

Step 5: Repeat until you are happy with the result.

If you want to use the bead method, check out this TikTok tutorial:

Step 1: Take a strand of hair tinsel and feed it through a hair bead using a pair of pliers.

Step 2: After securing the tinsel through the hair bead, use a hair pick to take a small section of your natural hair and bring it through the bead.

Step 3: Lay the hair flat and then clamp the hair bead close with a pair of pliers.

Step 4: Repeat as many times as desired.

Okay, so now you know the 411, the question remains: would you slay this TikTok-adored hair trend?
