Is The Sea Your Answer To The Softest Lips Ever?

product review

MAKE beauty Sea Salt Exfoliator & Marine Lip Repair kitOne of the things I love about being a beauty blogger is getting the chance to discover new brands, try new and exciting products, and share them with you. My latest discovery is a new brand called MAKE Beauty; they’re all about self-expression and breaking the beauty rules – I love that! While recently shopping on Net-A-Porter, I noticed one of their products, the Sea Salt Exfoliator & Marine Lip Repair kit, so I had to check it out. I was intrigued; would my lips be the softest they’ve ever been? Could this be my new beauty staple?

What it is: A two-step rejuvenating lip repair kit that includes a sea salt exfoliating scrub and a protective lip balm.

What it does: With real sea salt crystals suspended in a soothing oil-based cream, the scrub gently buffs away dead skin and polishes away dry skin while the oil simultaneously smooths lips. The balm instantly soothes lips with natural oils, while Shea Butter adds long-lasting hydration.

What we liked: I love that 10% of sales are donated to the We See Beauty Foundation, which supports women-led businesses in poor communities – I think that is so amazing. I also think the packaging is cute and simple, even if it does give me a bit of a Topshop vibe. I tried the scrub (more on that later) and followed it with the marine lip repair. The lip repair formula is unusual; it’s very gooey and stays on your lips forever, and because it doesn’t move, I found it very hydrating. It’s also very sticky, and although they say this can be used as a lip primer, I’m not sure that it would work well under lipstick as it is so thick. I think this would be an amazing overnight treatment so you can wake up with super soft lips, but for daytime, I’d rather wear a Liquid Matte.

What we didn’t like: The results were great, but I can’t say I was a fan of the process. The scrub was strange; it kind of smelled like medicine, and because it’s salt, well, you know it’s not going to taste good! I can’t fault the scrubbing effect; it worked well, and it was oily, not dry, so it’s a comfortable formula. However, the fact that I could taste it meant I didn’t want to leave it on my lips for very long. I wish they had used sugar because I think it would have tasted much better and scrubbed a little more.

I didn’t find this lip repair kit life-changing, and I’d still go to my La Mer lip products over this. It’s not a bad product, but it’s just not a new favorite for me. I love brands that try new things, and I love the ethical background of this brand, so I definitely think it’s one to watch, and I look forward to trying their makeup collections.
