I FINALLY Tried The Makeup By Mario Foundation...

This week I FINALLY got to try the new Makeup By Mario SurrealSkin Liquid Foundation, $42. I had been seeing it literally everywhere, so I had to order it. Obvs when it finally arrived, I had to try it straight away. Honestly, nothing gets me more excited than trying a new complexion product, especially from the likes of Mario, who is a complexion God.

I was also seeing some mixed reviews, so I was seriously intrigued to see how the foundation would look on my skin and, most importantly, how it would wear. I really can’t deal with foundations that move as I’m an apply-makeup-in-the-morning, no-touchups kinda girl. The thing is, with the right formulas and makeup application, you shouldn’t really need to touch up. Here’s what happened when I trialed the formula all day, and NGL, it was a busy day with shooting, meetings, and basically my hectic AF lifestyle!

What it is: Okay, so on the site, it says it’s a “breathable, luminous foundation [which} effortlessly builds and blends to illuminate the complexion with customizable, long-wearing coverage.”

It also features Mario’s MoistureGrip™ technology and is infused with grapeseed oil and vegetable squalene to hydrate the skin for up to 12 hours. It’s also enriched with skin-perfecting powders that work with the skin’s natural texture for a smoother, more airbrushed finish.

I mean, it sounds like everything I want, but I had questions… would it blur my pores? Would it last all day? Would it be too luminous? As soon as I saw the bottle, I noticed the luminous pearls, so I was worried it might slip a little.

The shade range: There are 30 flexible shades in total; ranging from light, light medium, medium, medium to dark, and dark. There’s a range of neutral, warm, and cool undertones as well, which is super important to pay attention to when finding your shade.

When creating the shades, Mario said he wanted to take away “shade-matching anxiety,” which honestly is a real thing! So, each shade can be worn by two to three different skin tones and stretch effortlessly. I tried the shade 15N in my tutorial for reference, and it was a pretty perfect match.

My first impression: When I try new complexion products, I always like to do it without primer to see the real wear-time of the formula. As soon as I applied it to the skin, I was really impressed; my skin instantly looked more even and just really luminous and beautiful. Some foundations accentuate my pores, and this one just smoothed and evened out my complexion with the most stunning, skin-like finish. It was definitely easily buildable and didn’t look cakey.

I applied my foundation with a brush for more control and extra coverage, but you could definitely apply this with a makeup sponge or even your fingers for a more natural finish.

I always set my foundation with our Huda Beauty Easy Bake Loose Setting Powder, $35, so once I had applied the rest of my makeup, the original luminosity did reduce a little, but I was still SOOOO obsessed with the final look.

Customizable coverage? Check. Breathable? Check. Luminous? For sure!

How The Surreal Skin Liquid Foundation Wore Throughout the Day

After a very full day, AKA my regular day, the foundation held up really well! There was a little bit of shine peeking through in places, but this is likely down to the hydrating ingredients. With a lil’ dusting of powder, you’d be good to go again. For extra coverage, I recommend using concealer to spot conceal, rather than building with the foundation, as this will avoid product build-up.

Overall, I really like how this foundation looked, and it definitely gives a luminous finish. There do appear to be shimmers in the formula (the ingredients say ‘may contain mica’), so this could be why it gives such a pretty, radiant finish. If you have oily skin, I definitely recommend setting this with a mattifying powder all over to make sure it stays in place all day. Overall, I really loved the natural skin finish,  and it’s definitely a foundation I’ll be wearing again.

My final thoughts: Honestly, Mario did it, but then what would you expect from him? I’ve been loving his makeup products, he always drops such stunning formulas, and this is no different. The skin finish is just GORGEOUS and I think it might be one of my new faves!
