Before you break out your martini shaker and olive sticks, let us set the agenda straight; today, we’re discussing mascara cocktailing… so no vermouth needed. But don’t worry, the end result is equally lust-worthy, and even better, the hack is easy to achieve! We’ve also scaled the drugstore aisle for products to ensure it won’t break the bank. We gotchu!

So here’s the tea… Mascara cocktailing involves mixing and matching multiple formulas to create your own unique product catered to your lashes. Right now, the hack is trending on TikTok, but it’s been a pro-MUA secret for years. In fact, it’s the exact hack that inspired our very own LEGIT LASHES Double-Ended Volumizing and Lengthening Mascara, $29, which features two wands and two formulas that can be combined or worn alone depending on your desired result. But before we get into the product deets, here’s the TikTok tea…

The hack: Every mascara on the shelves serves one main purpose; whether that’s lengthening, curling, volumizing, or thickening. By layering two or more formulas, you combine these functions and can tailor them to the needs of your lashes. For example, if you have short, fine lashes, by layering a lengthening and a volumizing or thickening mascara, you’ll get that false lash effect more easily than simply layering on multiple coats of one formula. Alternatively, if you have long, straight lashes, you can forget about lengthening mascaras and instead layer a curling mascara and a volumizing formula to fake that false lash look.

We swear once you start using this hack, you’ll never stop, as the results are just too good. The only drawback is you obviously need to have a couple different formulas in your kit, and that’s when it can start getting pricey. So to help, we’ve lined up a list of combos using drugstore mascaras.

Obviously, there aren’t just three great combos, as there are literally thousands of mascaras out there. Our top tip for finding a bomb combo? Look at the wand. We like to combine a fluffier wand with an hourglass shape that gives that wispiness we LUURVE while thickening your lashes. Then, we like to layer a formula with a thinner rubber wand, as these typically add length and definition to your lashes and can help remove any clumps lingering from the first few coats. Okay, now you know our tips, here are three great drugstore mascara cocktails:

1. For Fine Lashes: L’Oréal Lash Paradise, $13, + L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Mascara, $13

   Source: L’Oreal

The L’Oréal Lash Paradise has been our go-to drugstore formula ever since Sir John (Beyoncé’s MUA) recommended it to us years ago. The hourglass wand hugs your lashes, reaching from root to tip, lengthening and thickening. It gives this stunning fanned-out lash finish, which is only made better by the lengthening L’Oréal Paris Telescopic Mascara. This second layer will also help comb through and separate the lashes, so they don’t look spidery. #LOVE

2. For Straight Lashes: BLK/OPL Super Volumizing Mascara, $12, + Covergirl Super Sizer Mascara, $11

Source: BLK/OPL, COVERGIRL

If you want to add some curl to your lashes, this combo is a slam dunk. The curled wand of the BLK/OPL formula will lift each lash and add dimension and thickness. The formula even boasts an innovative thickening complex that’ll leave your lashes looking longer and fuller. Layer this with the rubber-bristled wand from Covergirl, and you’ll be left with the most fluffy-looking lashes that remain flake-free all day long.

3. For Sensitive Eyes or Short Lashes: Neutrogena Healthy Volume Mascara, $8  + Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Mascara, $13

Source: Neutrogena, Maybelline

Anyone with sensitive lashes or who finds their mascara smudges will love this pairing. The Neutrogena formula is dermatologist and ophthalmologist-tested and is also aluminum-free. It delivers natural, fluffy lashes in just a couple of coats, which is amplified by the Maybelline wand, which is a TikTok fave that adds MAJOR length. Seriously, our lashes have never looked better!
