Purple Is The Next BIG Color Trend (Here's How To Wear It)

Purple color trend

Since we went into lockdown, trends have definitely taken a backseat, but if there’s one that’s coming in strong, it has to be purple. The color has unexpectedly overtaken Pantone’s color of the year – classic blue – and is predicted to be THE color next season. And we’re obsessed, purple is regal, glamorous, and most importantly, it’s more wearable than you may think. Whether you opt for a deep plum eyeliner to accentuate your eyes or a playful pastel shadow, it’s time to embrace the royal hue. Here’s how to work the color in your favor…

Go Pastel

If you’re looking to ease your way into the color trend, experiment with soft pastel shadows. Keep it simple with a light wash of color or add depth by contouring the crease with a complementary nude shade. Our Huda Beauty PASTEL Obsession Eyeshadow Palette in Lilac, $33, was created with this technique in mind.

Top tip: To make pastels pop, use a light-colored concealer as a base. This works especially well for deeper skin tones, as pastel shades can have a tendency to look a little grey. The concealer will also help to grip pigment in place to prevent fading.

A Splash Of Mascara

Colored mascara has to be one of 2020’s most unexpected beauty trends; and TBH we’re low key obsessed. One swipe of a colored mascara and you’ll add a playful element to any look. The great thing about purple mascara is you can choose between lilac hues like the ColorPop Purple Prose Bff Mascara, $8, or a more discreet plum, like the Maybelline Snapscara Washable Mascara Ultra Violet, $6.

Top tip: We recommend layering the purple on top of your regular black mascara for an understated pop of color, or you can layer a white primer underneath the purple mascara for a bit more drama – like the above!

Experiment With Liner

Another less intimidating way to add purple into your look is to opt for a sharply drawn cat-eye. It’s sexy and modern but still has a colorful edge. Another major benefit? Depending on the shade of the eyeliner, it will accentuate the color of your eyes. If you have blue eyes or green, a plum liner will make your eyes pop. Alternatively, if you have brown eyes, use a lilac liner to contrast and highlight your eyes.

Our new Purple Haze Obsessions palette is ideal for using as a smokey plum liner, or soft modern smokey eye.

Contrast with Neon Hues

Neon isn’t going anywhere, in fact, it works well when layered with soft purple hues as demonstrated by Karen Yeung. By working both color trends simultaneously, you’ll create an edgy look that stands out.

Rock A Plum Lip

Unsure where to take the color trend next? A plum lip always looks chic and sexy. The key to pulling it off lies in the application, which is why it’s so important to use a lip liner to get clean, crisp lines. If it’s your first time, we’d recommend a matte lip like the Huda Beauty Liquid Lipstick in shade Famous, $20, as it’s less likely to smudge or bleed… Especially if you’re wearing a protective mask!

Experiment with Jewel Tones

Tired of the classic smokey eye? Apply the same principles but switch up the color scheme to purple. Accent a softer purple hue with a rich jewel-tone. Don’t forget to line the watershed with a kohl pencil like the MAC Eye Khol in shade Prunella, $18, for added drama. To complete the look, add a hint of shimmer to open up the eye.
