It wasn’t until recently – yes, at my big age of 28 years – that I uncovered the sheer brilliance of self-tanner for melanated skin. The bronzer and self-tanner section right before the SPF aisle? Yup, I used to *consistently* walk past it without thinking, but not anymore, thanks to everyone’s favorite esthetician and beauty maestro, Tiara Willis, famously known as @MakeupforWOC, who continuously attested to its skin-evening and glow-boosting effects on melanin-rich complexions. Fast forward to now, and a Black girl self-tanner movement is slowly erupting on Twitter and TikTok, with many beauties of color vouching for the technique.

Why is it a Game Changer for Deep Skin Tones?
Discoloration is a skin woe that commonly impacts melanated complexions, and what self-tanner does is help even the skin out and lessen the appearance of dark spots like pigmentation, stretch marks, and KP (keratosis pilaris) while adding a nourished body glow as an extra. In her now-viral TikTok tutorial, Sabrina Johnson, an LA-based spray tan stylist and the founder of Gold Trim Tans, shares her tips for a streak-free and flawless finish.
1. “Make sure you shave (if you want) and exfoliate your skin” to buff away any dry skin, flakiness, and residue (including makeup, sunscreen, and deodorant) as this can cause uneven blotches and streaks.
2. “[Next], put aside dark, baggy clothes as this is what you’ll wear for the next four hours while your tan develops before your first rinse.”
3. Use gloves instead of mitts – “[this way] you’ll get further use out of your whole bottle without losing product to the mitt.”
4. Apply self-tanner “very lightly over your elbows and knees” as these areas are already typically darker than the rest of the body.
