As much as we love extravagant beauty routines, a 10-step K-beauty routine doesn’t come cheap, which is why we’ve always been obsessed with DIYs. Not only are they super fun to make, but they’re also a much cheaper alternative to treatments and store-bought products, and they can be just as effective. Considering DIYs are made from all-natural ingredients in their most raw form, not only do the nutrients pack a punch, but there aren’t any harmful toxins. Here are three of our all-time DIY faves that can fix pretty much any beauty issue; from dry, brittle hair to dull skin.

Our Ride or Die Hair Mask

hair mask

If you can resist the urge to turn your avocados into guac – it’s hard, we know – you need to make this avocado hair mask; it leaves you with the shiniest, softest hair. Avocados are full of healthy fats that’ll replenish the hair follicle, keeping split ends at bay and combating frizz. Plus, the addition of coconut oil makes this mega-hydrating, while the egg whites will help balance oil production.

Ingredients

1 avocado
1 egg yolk
2 tablespoons of coconut oil

Cost: $8
Branded alternative: Coco & Eve Super Nourishing Coconut and Fig Hair Mask, $45

Mash the avocado in a bowl until smooth, then mix in the egg yolk and the coconut oil. Massage onto hair and scalp and leave for 20 minutes before washing as usual. This mask also works wonders for fighting frizz.

Our Go-To Mask For Glowing Skin

face mask

Every single ingredient in this mask has serious skincare powers. First up there’s yogurt, which will act as a gentle exfoliator as it contains the hydrating yet gently exfoliating AHA, lactic acid, so it’ll dissolve any dead skin debris, as well as any dirt that’s clogging your pores. Then there’s turmeric; a potent anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory that’ll help kill any acne bacteria and soothe inflammation. The addition of honey will soothe, and hydrate by drawing moisture into the skin as it’s a natural humectant. Finally, the cranberries provide the antioxidants; as well as vitamins C, E, and K, all of which will give you hella-radiant skin. Basically, it’s the bomb.com and we’re high key obsessed.

Ingredients:

2 tablespoons of plain organic yogurt
2 teaspoons of raw organic honey
2 teaspoons of turmeric
1/2 cup of pureed cranberries

Cost of 1 tub: $12
Branded alternative: Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Mask, $42

Mix the ingredients in a bowl, then slather it on your face with your fingers (or a brush) and let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Finally, rinse with lukewarm water and follow with your favorite moisturizer. Store the remaining mask in a glass, airtight jar in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Our Beautifying Body Scrub

coffee scrub

We’ve been using coffee scrubs for years as they leave your skin feeling super soft and luscious. So, we decided to DIY our own, and the results are major. A coffee scrub can even help reduce the appearance of cellulite as the caffeine content will improve blood flow and help dilate blood vessels. The process itself is also great for your skin: If you use strong circular motions, the massage will boost lymphatic drainage and improve blood circulation, thereby removing toxins from your body. This recipe has become our go-to as the coffee and sugar will gently buff away dead skin while the coconut oil and rose oil will hydrate and soften.

Ingredients

1 cup of fresh organic coffee grounds
1 cup of organic coconut oil
1 cup of brown muscovado sugar
4 drops of rose oil (or your fave essential oil)

Cost of 1 tub: $5
Branded alternative: Thank You Botanical Geranium Rosewood Coffee Body Scrub, $15

Combine the ingredients in a bowl and stir well. As this scrub is pretty messy, apply it to damp skin in the shower using circular movements, then wash it off with warm water. Once you’ve showered, make sure you moisturize within five minutes (when your skin’s still damp) to lock in moisture for soft, hydrated skin.
