This kinda gross, but super effective non-invasive procedure can do everything from help fade stretch masks, give you an eye lift, tighten sagging skin, soften eye bags, and even create the appearance of a larger upper lip. The procedure in question is Plasma IQ, and it appears to ‘burn’ small holes into your skin to encourage tighter, more youthful skin. We know, it sounds crazy, so here’s everything you need to know about how this treatment works, with the help of plasma specialist and registered nurse Nathalie Nellange.

What Is Plasma IQ?

“Plasma IQ is a piece of equipment among other types of plasma pen brands. The plasma IQ can be used for various treatments. The most common ones are to remove old scar tissue and to tighten up loose skin. Rejuvenation of the skin and getting rid of stretch marks is also very popular.” Nathalie tells us.

How Does Plasma work?

“Plasma IQ has a tip that converts power into an electrostatic impulse. When the needle comes close to the skin surface, a mixture of oxygen-nitrogen occurs, which emits a flash of the plasma light. For a tenth of a second a microchannel opens up in the skin layer and the heat from the plasma flash causes the excess fluid to evaporate out of the skin. This results in an immediate tightening. The superficial wound that appears stimulates the regeneration of fibroblasts in the skin and this is an important part of the healing process and collagen production. When the skin heals, the edges pull together and creates additional tightening. The treatment is very kind to the skin with no damage to the surrounding tissue therefore with limited downtime. It’s a great treatment that simply eliminates the first signs of aging and establishes a younger look.”

Okay, so now you know the basics, here’s how it can target different areas:

The Plasma Lip Flip

“When the skin is tightening, the effect will also cause a lift as the surrounding skin is pulled together. The result of the lip flip is highly individual, some may reach great effect at first treatment and others may need 2-3 times before they gain their desired results.”

Nathalie does say that although “The results are long lasting, it doesn’t prevent the natural aging process. There are some areas which are more sensitive to the aging process, for example, the face. Besides humans natural aging process there are more things that can affect the long-lasting results and it’s connected to how you treat your skin in general. The results will last at a minimum rate of 4-6 years, but most times even longer depending on your habits. The better you take care of your body, the longer you will have your desired results. The great thing with plasma treatment is that you can repeat the treatment up to three times on the same area if you wish for more effect.”

When used on the undereye, Nathalie says: “The tightening effect is caused by the small microchannels created by the plasma device. You can actually see with the naked eye how the skin is tightened as a result of the heat from the plasma flash. This causing the excess fluid to evaporate out of your skin and resulting in an immediate tightening effect.” However, it will not address pigmentation; “Dark circles are often caused by volume loss and plasma cannot give more volume to the area as fillers can. But for fine lines and drooping skin, it’s perfect.”

The Plasma Lid Lift

When we asked if plasma can actually act like a non-surgical eyelid lift, Nathalie replied “Yes! Of course, the result will not be as dramatic as an eyelid surgery because we are working with the natural healing process of the skin. This means it can take more than one treatment to reach a final result.” The good thing is, it lasts for a long time, Nathalie told us: “The Minimum is 4-6 years, but longer depending on how well you treat your skin in general, which in turn can affect the natural aging process in a positive way.” She adds “It’s more common for eyelids to heal even faster than other areas of the body.”

If you’re wondering about the pain, Nathalie rightfully notes: “Pain is highly subjective. Some would experience the eye-area as more sensitive. It is not dangerous in any way to do this area, it’s like the rest of the body. If you are interested in this treatment it is particularly important to visit a professional provider with an approved plasma device which will not cause harm to the skin. There are many unqualified people with cheap copies out there that could cause harm to your skin.”

Now for all the details about Plasma IQ:

Is it Painful?

We’ve got to admit it looks painful but Nathalie reassures us, “It doesn’t hurt if your practitioner uses the right method to numb the area. Besides a good numbing technique, some can experience tenderness but it’s highly subjective. I always use local numbing cream for at least 60 minutes on the area before the treatment starts. I also cover the numbed area with a plastic film so the numbing cream is not dried out.”

The Downtime

The downtime varies slightly depending on the area that’s treated. “The dots disappear within a week in the face area and about two weeks on the body. After a while, a slight redness can be seen where the dots have been. The full result will occur after 8-12 weeks and sometimes the recovery takes even longer before the skin is completely healed. During the healing process, it is important to avoid the sunlight and use SPF 50.” Nathalie told us.

Do the Marks Ever Leave Scarring?

Nathalie assures us that “Normally no. If someone neglects the rules of the aftercare it could cause scars. A big no is for example to scratch the treated area causing the dots to be torn off.”

Look at that lift on the bellybutton after only five days post treatment ! The dots are now ready to fall of, at this time a sort of itchy feeling emerges due to the healing of the skin. This is normal and occurs when the new skin cells are being produced and activates the neurons who detects the feeling by causing itchiness. . .

The Aftercare

Although you need to wear SPF daily, it’s especially important post-plasma: “It’s important for the healing process to avoid the sunlight and use SPF 50. During the first two days, you should also avoid make-up on the treated area and don’t use products that contain AHAs within the first week” Good hygiene is also essential, Nathalie says “To reduce the risk of infection clean pillowcases and towels are recommended. I also recommend using disinfectants gently on the treated area, which is especially good for itchiness, 3-5 times a day during the first 2-3 days. Don’t scratch the dots which has been created, they will fall off by themselves.”

What to Expect Post-Plasma Procedure

Day 1: There will be some swelling.
Day 2: The swelling may get a little bit worse before they get better.
Day 3: The swelling has gone down and the treated area is dry and the dots are clear.
Day 4/5: The dots will begin to fall off the skin
Day 7: The skin is starting to look nice and smooth again. Although, remember the skin can be tender up to 3 weeks after treatment.

How to Prepare for Plasma

“You should always maintain a good skin routine but it’s really important prior to plasma. It’s also favorably to avoid NSAID medication [aspirin, neuorfen] a week before and after the treatment. You can also boost the healing process by eating vitamin C the week before and during the healing. Smoking is never a good thing and it can also slow down the healing process.”
