VOTE: Would You Try These Summer Beauty Trends?

During a quick recess at HB HQ, we posed the question to our beauty-obsessed colleagues… “As much as you love hearing about new trends, how often do you actually try them?” The response was varied… Some replied “always” while others admitted, somewhat sheepishly, “not often” and instead like to keep it classic.

We wanted to see what your response to trends is, so we’re asking you to vote for the hair and makeup trends that are predicted to be BIG this summer. Some are bold, risqué, and more permanent than others while others can be removed as easily as they’re applied. So, get voting!!

1. The Androgynous Bob

Ever since salons re-opened, our feed has been infiltrated with short, cropped cuts and chic bobs. One look that’s continued to dominate is the androgynous bob, which (casually) skims the cheekbones. It girls like Emma Corrin (who shot to fame after playing Diana in The Crown) and Kaia Gerber have both experimented with the cropped cut, and we couldn’t love it anymore.

Most recently, Halle Berry debuted an edgy bob at the 2021 Oscars. While the haircut has received mixed reviews, we love the bold, modern edges and blunt fringe.

If you’re craving a softer more romantic vibe, take note from Kaia who has opted for face-framing layers and feathered ends. It’s ultra-flattering and elongates your neck.

Ombre lips, frosted purple eyeshadow, claw clips, and messy space buns have been making a resurgence over the past year. This late 90s and early ’00s style has been crowned Y2K. However, TikTok has catapulted Y2K beauty into the forefront of our minds. If you had told us back in early 2020 that we’d be lusting over the early ’00s trend, we wouldn’t have believed you. However, the pandemic has us feeling nostalgic for simpler days when over-tweezed eyebrows were our biggest concern.

Y2K has racked up 1.7 billion views on TikTok alone, which is “totally rad.” In the mix, there’s an array of beauty tutorials, daily outfit inspo, and of course, iconic quotes and movie scenes from the likes of Mean Girls to Mary Kate and Ashley.

Overlined lips are arguably the biggest trend of the past decade. However, thanks to TikTok – an expression, we’re saying non-stop RN – we’re seeing a new method of overlining named “lip wings”. Similar to winged eyeliner but instead using a lip pencil, TikTokers have been over-lining the outer corner of their lips, creating an upward flick AKA the “lip wing.” The aim is to create a lifted, voluptuous pout that’s similar to a doll’s smile.

Our top tip? Whenever you overline your lips, use a shade that’s as close to your natural lip color as possible and gradually overline. Remember, you can always add but once you’ve overlined too much, you’ll mess up the edges and it won’t look natural.

Are Lips Wings For You?

For Sure!
Not For Me

As soon as Zendaya stepped onto the Oscars red carpet, the world let out a gasp of joy. The look was almost instantly crowned the best look of the night and will go down as one of the most iconic looks in Oscar’s history.

Of course, the yellow dress won over the heart of the fashion elite but the beauty-sphere was dying over her paired back makeup and long mermaid waves. It consolidated the whispers that mermaid locks will be the look of the summer, and we’re totally here for it.

While mermaid locks might not be a “new trend,” they’re undoubtedly seeing a 2021 resurgence. Celebs like Kylie Jenner, Lizzo, and Shay Mitchell have all slayed the ethereal hairstyle putting their own twist on the look.

In fact, Kylie has been combining two current hair trends: high gloss locks and mermaid waves, and the result is stunning. To add a high gloss finish to any hairstyle, celeb hairstylist Dom Seeley recommends using Color Wow Extra MIST-ical Shine Spray, $20, as it’s quick and easy to use yet still delivers a high level of shine. He explains, “I love this product as it’s super lightweight, it’s instant, non-greasy, and has an incredibly realistic shine. It also contains heat protectant and melts into hair when used with flat or curling irons.”

If you don’t have natural waves, celebrity hairstylist Chris Appleton recently spilled how to achieve the look at home. Chris says to start by, “Sectioning your hair into a middle parting and braid two low braids on each side, ensuring you keep your roots flat. Then, go to sleep with them braided or go over dry hair with a flat iron to create the perfect undone, on-trend waves.” With this style, Chris insists, “It’s important to keep the roots flat so there’s not too much volume but there’s still that beautiful undone texture on the ends.”

Will You Slay Mermaid Waves This Summer?

OMG! Yes
No Thanks!

According to celebrity MUA nikki_makeup, feral brows are set to be the biggest brow trend of the summer. While feathered brows have been around for the past two years, feral brows push the term “bushy” to new heights. Plus, unlike laminated brows, which are perfectly laid and set, feral brows are unruly and untamed.

So, cancel your next brow appointment and put down the tweezers, it’s time to grow out your brows, brush them up, and then… Leave them in all their length and glory. And don’t sweat about mismatched, uneven brows, feral brows welcome your natural brow shape – it’s 2021 after all!

Are You Feeling Feral Brows?

Yes!
Nope…

When it comes to our locks, not only are we opting for shorter cuts but we’re also looking for new colors as we leave the home dye alone at last! The color du jour? “Reel” blonde as debuted by Billie Eilish. The term “reel” is a nod to social media reels. Apparently, on-trend clients are looking for Insta-ready color that looks straight outta an Instagram ‘reel’.

Of course, with hair color this bright, it requires regular maintenance. Invest in a purple shampoo to nix unwanted brassy tones. We love the Kerastase Blonde Absolu Anti Brass Shampoo, $33, or the Shimmer Lights Shimmer Lights Purple Shampoo for Blonde & Silver Hair, $14, for a more affordable fix.

Will You Take The Plunge And Get Reel Blonde?

Duh!
It’s Not For Me

Eyeliner will forever be our go-to but now that we’re wearing masks 24/7, we constantly relying on fierce liner looks. One liner trend that’s caught our eye (quite literally) is negative space eyeliner. It’s cool, edgy, graphic, and easier to create than you may think.

The secret to achieving a flawless negative wing is using a super fine eyeliner tip. We’ve been loving NYX Professional Makeup Matte Liquid Liner, $8, for this exact reason. Don’t be afraid to play with different hues, in fact, we’ll be wearing neon negative eyeliner all summer long.

Are You Vibing Negative Space Liner?

For Sure!
No Thanks!
