Coconut-Girl

Real talk: is TikTok the new Teen Vogue? Over the past year, SO many of the major trends, from Y2K beauty to cottage core, were all born and popularized on TikTok, with celebs and even fashion houses following suit. The latest style making waves is the ‘coconut girl’ trend. Think: surfer girl a la 2000s – Blue Crush vibes meet Aquamarine. While the vibe has been nicknamed coconut girl, this is definitely not exclusively for girls, in the same way that the e-girl look isn’t either!

The Coconut girl trend is essentially everything we associate with summer, from fun prints and cute ‘dos to effortless makeup looks and delicious coconut scents and locations. Whether they know it or not, we’ve seen everyone from supermodels like Hailey Bieber, Kendall Jenner, and Adut Akech Bior to TikTok sensation Addison Rae, and legend Lizzo wearing elements of this playful summer trend. Here’s everything you need to know…

The Coconut Girl Hype

If grunge or E-girl was not your vibe, coconut girl is the ultimate antithesis. On Urban Dictionary, the look is explained as an “aesthetic that got popular on TikTok in 2021. Some of the staples are hibiscus prints, glitter tattoos, and graphic tank tops. It is reminiscent of early 2000’s summer styles.”

It’s fun and playful and perfect for summer. The hashtag currently has over 9 million views. Most of the videos usually include a collection of the aforementioned items, plus scenic beach shots, seashell necklaces, and a Lana Del Ray soundtrack overlayed.

The OG icons of the coconut girl aesthetic include Kate Bosworth in Blue Crush, Rihanna in her Pon De Replay days, and everything about Aquamarine. It radiates care-free hot girl summer energy, and we’re so here for it. If you want major inspo, we suggest a movie marathon while you DIY shell necklaces.

As the coconut girl trend is super beachy and yet reminiscent of 2000s summer vibes, it can go one of two ways when it comes to makeup. First up, you can go for a skinimalist no-makeup makeup look: dewy, sunkissed skin, feathered brows, and lip balm. Or you can step it up with frosty lids and lashings of lip gloss.

Our new GloWish Mutlidew Skin Tint, $32, is actually perfect for this look, as it’ll leave your skin with the most stunning glow. For a quick five-minute makeup look, we’d start by applying the tint, then conceal with a sheer formula like the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer, $7. Next up, keep it fresh with a cream blush – we’re obsessed with the e.l.f Jelly Pop Flush Blush, $6, as it has a glass skin finish, which is ideal for this look. Finish by brushing your brows with a tinted brow gel like the Benefit Cosmetics Gimme Brow+ Tinted Volumizing Eyebrow Gel, $24, and adding a lip stain or lip balm to your lips.

The coconut girl vibe is cute and carefree, so let your natural freckles shine through or play with faux freckles – we love the Freck OG Freckle Pen, $22, which is the easiest way to create natural-looking freckles.

If you want to take this trend one step further, experiment with an icy 2000s eyeshadow look like Addison Rae. We love this lilac shimmer shadow, heavy mascara, and nude lip combination. It’s so retro, or should we say totally rad?

The Hair

When it comes to your hair, think undone texture and braids, braids, braids. We’re crushing over these long, flowing braids on Adut Akech Bior. Butterfly locs or godess braids also work perfectly for this trend.

To wake up with mermaid waves like Kendall Jenner, section damp hair into a middle parting and braid two low braids on either side, keeping your roots flat. By the time your hair dries, they’ll be wavy and beachy. If you have naturally straight or flat hair, spritz a texturizing hair spray onto your hair to add to that beachy texture and ensure the waves hold. We’re obsessed with the OAUI Texturizing Hair Spray, $26, as it instantly creates volume, absorbs any grease, and holds strong. Plus, it smells delicious.

Complete the look by braiding small sections for the ultimate coconut girl hairstyle. Try two micro braids to frame your face or take random sections all around your scalp.

Not feeling this look? A wavy bucket hat or a bandana is easy to style and works so well with this look.

The Nails

As we’re die-hard nail art fans, we couldn’t forget about coconut girl nails. Actually, we’ll be incorporating the vibe into our nail art all summer long with pastel hues, wavy swirls, delicate daisy detailing, and groovy patterns.

Mix and match different designs, and don’t be afraid to add some glitter detailing. It’s a 2000s-inspired trend, after all.
