Summer is here, and that means so is our summer ‘glow’ – except sometimes it’s more of an oil slick than a glow, and we’re really not feeling it. So, even when you drench your skin in your fav mattifying primer, as soon as it reaches midday, your skin is back to its usual state, aka oily AF. To sort you out for all your summer shenanigans and keep your skin looking as fresh as Winnie’s, we’ve got five lifesaving masks to help keep your overactive sebaceous glands in check. If you’re prone to oil, we suggest doing one of these twice weekly.

With a 4.5-star rating from nearly 1000 customers on Amazon, this potent little mud mask is becoming a cult fav. Packed with 100% natural ingredients, this mask helps balance oil production and keeps breakouts at bay. Dead sea salts and minerals replenish lost nutrients to give your skin a glow, and Kaolin clay removes dirt and grime from your pores, absorbing excess sebum to cleanse your skin, leaving it feeling fresh and clean. This has an intense tingling on first application, but don’t worry; that just means it’s getting to work. It also contains aloe, jojoba seed oil, and tons of essential oils to hydrate, soothe and balance your skin. You will love this! Shop it here, $12.

Our Insta page went absolutely crazy over this pink Australian clay mask, and at one point, there was even a 2,000-person waiting list, but we’ll be real; we totally understand why – it’s incredible! This detoxing mask contains all-natural ingredients from Down Under, including the especially Instagrammable pink Australian clay. The clay contains zeolite, a mineral that’ll help remove toxins by cleansing and purifying your skin, sucking out blackheads, and removing any dirt or oil clogging your pores, thereby minimizing their appearance. It’s also an amazing source of an organic, pure form of iron that helps brighten your skin. Other native detox ingredients like witch hazel (combats oil production), pomegranate (full of skin-brightening antioxidants), and bamboo and aloe (to soothe) make this 10-minute mask one of our go-to’s in the summer. Plus, it comes with a cute brush! Shop it here, $27.

If you’re acne-prone and a little oily, this Clearing Mask will help detox and decongest your pores while drawing out any excess oils. The salicylic and glycolic acid dissolves dead skin cells and removes any impurities in your skin to eradicate acne-causing bacteria and balance oil production, while the Bentonite clay helps to remove toxins and lift oils from your skin. Soothing chamomile and camphor soothes inflammation and redness and ensures your complexion isn’t stripped, while hyaluronic acid hydrates and balances. Use this once or twice weekly, and you’ll see a reduction in pimples and oil! Shop it here, $75.

This mask is SO satisfying, and if you’re as oily as any of us at HB HQ, you’ll literally be able to see the oil saturating the mask on your oiliest areas when it fully dries. This purifying mask will help keep excess oil in check, while eucalyptus, which has natural astringent properties, will regulate sebum as well as tighten, tone, and brighten your skin. The powerful combination of clays removes impurities and purifies your pores, making them appear tighter and less visible. Shop it here, $13.

DIY Clay, Green Tea, and Charcoal mask

As you’ve probably gathered by now, clay should be an essential in your skincare regimen – once a week is perfect. This is because it contains zeolite, which helps remove toxins and dirt from your pores, and as the mask dries, you’ll be able to see the oil being pulled from your skin – nothing is more satisfying than those dots (or, in our case, pools) of oil! In a similar way to clay, activated charcoal powder draws out sebum and oil from your skin; it’s even used in medicine to treat poison and gut problems as it’s so effective at removing pollutants. Then there’s green tea, which is kinda like the A-list of the skincare world; see why here.

Ingredients:

How to: Brew a bag of green tea and leave it to cool. Combine the bentonite clay and activated charcoal powder (be careful this can be messy!) and gently stir in the green tea – add more green tea if the consistency is too thick. Make sure you use a wooden spoon, as metal can affect the potency of the clay and charcoal. Use your fingers or an old makeup brush to apply the mask all over your face. Let the mask dry, then remove it after 15 minutes with lots of warm water. We like to do this mask while having a cup of green tea to help detoxify from the inside out as well. After all, good skin starts from within.

Don’t forget to moisturize after your clay mask, as the skin needs to be rehydrated; otherwise, it will produce extra oil to lubricate your skin. Look for a lightweight gel moisturizer packed with hydrators like hyaluronic acid. Check out nine other ways to keep your oily skin in check this summer here.
