These Are The Beauty Rules We're Taking Into 2023

Beauty-rules-to-live-by-2023

We’ll be real with you; in many ways, we don’t think much of beauty “rules.” The beauty space should be a community filled with creativity, expression, and self-love. For a long time, we’ve been told you need this to feel beautiful, or you must do this, but in reality, you don’t need anything. And you definitely don’t need a certain product or skin type to feel beautiful and like you belong.

So, this year’s beauty rules are a little different! We’re focusing on beauty as a form of self-care; the rituals we’re taking into 2023 are here to make us feel empowered and help us be the happiest, healthiest version of ourselves because – we know it’s cheesy, but it’s true – real beauty comes from within.

Beauty Rule #1: Be Kind To Yourself

This year remember to be kind to yourself. We know we can be our own harshest critic, but try to stamp out negative self-talk. Speak to yourself how you would a BFFL or loved one. You are beautiful, and you deserve to feel beautiful. Makeup, skincare, and haircare should be used to enhance your natural beauty and accentuate your uniqueness. Embrace who you are, what you have, and always look for the good – we know it’s there!

Beauty Rule #2: Invest in Sleep

Sleep is one of the most important self-care rituals in the book, so it’s time to take it seriously. We realize this sounds dramatic, but as the daughter of a sleep expert, we know it’s the cornerstone of a good life. Poor sleep has been linked to serious health conditions such as heart disease, as well as mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. It also impacts your glow game, energy levels, and your ability to move through life being the best version of YOU. Invest your time and effort in ensuring you get a good night’s sleep (always aim for eight hours) and practice good sleep hygiene. Need some help? Here are some sleep accessories and rituals a sleep expert swears by.

Beauty Rule #3: Have Mental Health Check-Ins with Your Friends

We cannot underestimate the importance of mental health, it’s simply too dangerous. And the truth is you can never know what’s going on in someone else’s life, so make sure you check in on your friends regularly. In 2019, it was said that 1 in 5 young people in the USA will develop a mental illness in their lifetime, and since the pandemic, that number is assumed to have grown.

We know it’s a hard topic, but try and have regular check-ins, prioritize self-care, and ask for help if needed. There’s absolutely no shame – only strength – in seeking help. Check out apps like Talkspace, which offer therapy, or MoodMission, which teaches you healthy coping mechanisms to relieve feelings of anxiety and depression. There are also free 24/7 helplines available worldwide, so if you’re worried about yourself or a loved one, don’t hesitate to call.

Beauty Rule #4: Use Sex-Care as Self-Care

Say it loud and say it proud: sex care is self-care. It’s (nearly) 2023, and that’s the truth. If you’re looking for receipts and studies, don’t worry, darlin’, we’ve got them. Research shows that sexual pleasure releases dopamine (the happy hormone), oxycontin (the love hormone), and other key endorphins we need to be happy and healthy. Scientific research has also proven that sex can reduce blood pressure and improve immunity. It’s been shown to boost your mood, self-confidence, and reduce anxiety – who else can relate? Even solo sex boasts this long list of benefits.

So, this year prioritize (safe) sex as a form of self-care, and connect with your sensual self. Need some inspo? Check out an expert’s guide on sex care as self-care.

Beauty Rule #5: Lock in a Skincare Routine and Be Consistent

To us, our skincare routine is a form of… you guessed it… self-care. It’s that time of day when we amp ourselves up in the am and decompress in the pm. We don’t just cleanse, tone, and moisturize; we incorporate other skin-loving rituals like facial massage and gua sha to help remove toxins from our skin, not just so our glow game improves, but because spending time on ourselves makes us feel better. And we all deserve that!

To ensure you keep up with your skincare routine, it’s important to lock in some core products and rituals. And don’t worry, it doesn’t need to be pricey – you can build a great routine for under $50. Once you’ve got one down, incorporate other rituals, like practicing positive affirmations, meditating, or just lighting a candle. Oh, and be consistent even if it takes a little extra time… *wink wink*

Beauty Rule #6:  Don’t be Afraid to Experiment with Beauty

Makeup is an artistic expression. Like all forms of art, it’s a tool to communicate how you’re feeling at that moment. Feeling bold? Rock a red lip and draped blush. Want your natural beauty to shine through? Use a glow-getting skin tint and drench your skin with restorative ingredients. Feeling like a baddie? How about a (faux) bleached brow? Don’t forget to have fun with makeup and experiment. What’s the worst that can happen? It goes wrong, and you wipe it away.

Beauty Rule #7: Get Regular Body Checks

Your body is the only place you’ll live your entire life, so it’s important to take good care of it. This year, make sure you schedule your annual checkup with your doctor and other specialists, like your OBGYN, for anyone with a uterus (hi, us too). It’s also essential to do your own check-ins, like examining your body, including your breasts, for anything out of the ordinary. If you notice something, don’t wait for it to get worse. Book an appointment and put your mind at ease.

And did you know that experts recommend seeing your dermatologist annually, too? Here’s why you should.
