Gym Lips Is TikTok's Sexiest New Technique, And We're Obsessed

When we first heard about the Gym Lips trend, we were hella confused…  We had no idea what lip products it would require or what it would look like. Turns out, it only involves two products – that you probably already own – and is a look you can wear anywhere, from a dinner date to the gym. Hence, the name: gym lips. *Light bulb moment.* For real though, it’s sexy, versatile, and easy to achieve – our kinda trend! Oh, and it already has celeb approval…

The hype: In essence, the trend is a quick and easy way to achieve fuller-looking yet naturally plump lips in seconds, so of course, it blew up on TikTok. The hashtag now has over 442K views. It’s giving Hailey Bieber and Yara Shahidi energy, AKA Gen Z clean girl vibes. In fact, Hailey Bieber recently shared her coveted lip routine and it’s exactly the same as gym lips!

The 411: The term ‘Gym lips’ was coined by makeup artist Kerri Anne Sewell, and was given its (kinda confusing) name as her friends had a running joke that she’d always brush up her brows and throw on this lip, even when going to the gym.

How to get the look: The look is SO. Damn. Easy and only involves two products: a lip liner in a hue that matches your natural lip shade and a hydrating lip balm with a dewy finish.

Step 1: Overline and fill in your lips with a creamy lip liner in a shade that’s as close to your natural lip color as possible. Remember, overline gradually! You don’t want the overlining to be too dramatic as it can take away from the “this is my natural juicy pout” vibe.

Step 2: Apply a hydrating, high shine lip balm all over your lips.

Yup, it’s that easy. As for the product deets, Kerri uses the Kevyn Aucoin Unforgettable Lip Liner, $22, in the shade Divine, then she applies the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm, $23, or the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask with Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C, $24, which is one of our faves as it has this stunning reflective shine that makes your lips look so full and sensual.

Our thoughts: This technique leaves your lips looking so juicy and sexy but never overdone, so it perfectly suits the clean, minimal, natural glam era we’re living in. It’s also user-friendly so whether you’re a newbie or a pro, you’ll be able to nail it from the get-go. Plus, you can use the same technique but play around with the final look like TikTok’er @cescavie who added the Benefit Benetint Rose Lip Blush & Cheek Tint, $30, for a flush of color. We’ve been experimenting with different nude shades, from pink to brown tones, and it still slays.

The bottom line: Honestly, we’ve basically been doing this ever since our Silk Balm Hydrating Lip Balm, $21, dropped and we’ve now refreshed the hack with our Silk Balm Icy Cryo-Plumping Lip Balm, $25, as the cryo-cooling effect makes your lips look extra plump. Our Lip Contour 2.o, $19, is also perfect for this hack as it’s super creamy and applies like a dream, but is also long-lasting. In short: we approve. Big time!
