The Best DIY Face Masks For Oily Skin

Thanks to your overactive sebaceous glands, you’re here to find a remedy to your ‘natural glow’ – that’s how we like to think of it. If you have super oily skin, you probably know that no amount of mattifying primer or powder is ever going to stop your skin from showing its true colors, that’s just down to your DNA and hormones. It’s an unfortunate fact, but there are plenty of things you can do to keep oil to a minimum and control that oil from melting through your makeup before you’ve even had lunch. So, we’ve pulled together the most oil-absorbing, pore-tightening, skin cleansing ingredients into three amazing-for-oily-skin face masks, with super easy-to-find ingredients you probably have lying around in your kitchen.

Egg, Oat, and Honey Mask

The idea of putting egg on your face may seem a little gross, but your pores will thank you for it as egg whites are amazing at toning skin and tightening the appearance of pores. Oats have incredible properties that will literally suck up oil and dirt and exfoliate your pores, while they’re also anti-inflammatory and have proteins that will protect the skin’s barrier function. And finally, honey – that nourishing, soothing, antibacterial goodness – because we all know honey is amazing for you!

Ingredients:

  • 1 egg white
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • 1 tbsp ground oats

How to: Whisk the egg white with the honey until thoroughly combined and the mix looks frothy. Stir in the ground oats (the finer the better) until you have a paste. Smother your face in the mix, avoiding your eyes, and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. Wash away with warm water. Check out more ways you can use oats here.

Clay, Charcoal & Green Tea Mask

By far the most powerful mask on our list, clay should be an essential in your skincare regime – once a week is perfect. Clay contains zeolite, which helps remove toxins and dirt from your pores, and as the mask dries, you will literally see the oil being pulled out from your skin – nothing is more satisfying than those dots (or, in our case, pools) of oil! In a similar way to clay, activated charcoal powder draws out sebum and oil from your skin; it’s even used in medicine to treat poison and gut problems as it’s so effective at removing pollutants.  Green tea is like the A-list of the skincare world, see why here, and helps to soothe and calm the skin.

Ingredients:

How to: Brew a bag of green tea and leave it to cool. Combine the bentonite clay and activated charcoal powder (be careful, this can be messy!) and gently stir in the green tea – add more green tea if the consistency is too thick. Make sure you use a wooden spoon, as metal can affect the potency of the clay and charcoal. Use your fingers or an old makeup brush to smear the mask all over your skin. Let the mask dry, then remove it after 15 minutes with lots of warm water. Be sure to hydrate your skin well after.

Banana, Yogurt, and Turmeric Mask

Banana has been our bae for a long time, and if you want to keep it simple, just rub a banana peel on your pimples, and you’ll see how powerful they are! Bananas are packed with vitamins and acne-fighting ingredients like zinc and vitamin A, they’re also amazing for oily skin, offering moisturizing properties as well – because we all know oily skin needs moisture too! Yogurt contains lactic acid (a natural AHA), which helps to dissolve dead skin cells and deep-cleanses pores thoroughly. Turmeric will offer your skin a dose of antioxidants and a hit of anti-inflammation while brightening your complexion.

Ingredients:

  • Half a banana, mashed
  • 1 tbsp yogurt
  • 1 tsp turmeric

How to: Mash up half a banana with a fork, and stir in the yogurt and turmeric. Use an old makeup brush to apply the mix in a thick (but not dripping) layer over your entire face, avoiding eyes. Leave on for 20 minutes, then wash your face with warm water and a face cloth.
